Kohl

"Kohl"

No matter how many dogs one has, only one becomes a heart dog. Kohl is that dog for me. Obtained from Karen Lee of Surrey Hill Whippets, he quickly became a member of our pack, and became friends with Dixie and Nastar, who already resided with us. He was quite rambunctious as a puppy, and took great pleasure in chasing and being chased in the yard with his housemates.

I decided to venture into the show ring with Kohl. It quickly became apparent that he was, indeed, special. Winning came easily for him, but he was not a fan of being a show dog. We showed him sparingly, and he accumulated points almost every time he stepped in the ring. Once finished, he went in on an occasional basis, where he came home with Best of Breed or Best of Opposite Sex ribbons. His one venture into the Group ring rewarded him with a Group 3 placement!! Ah, if only..........but I don’t make my dogs do what they dislike, so eventually the show ring became a fond memory for Team Kohl.

I have always said that Kohl was “born to run”. While he straight raced and was ARX pointed, his true love was lure coursing. He was a fabulous runner, and racked up quite a few major accomplishments over the course of his career (see awards page). His running style was pure power, which was a thing of beauty. I could watch him all day/every day! Receiving the High Score Bench Champion award at major events became a normal occurrence for Kohl.

At 10 years old, his competitive days were behind him. He had spinal surgery for a disc that was pushing against the nerve bundle, causing him a great deal of pain. Suddenly, a whippet who could run all day could not even walk up stairs. The surgery gave him a pain-free ‘senior’ life, and he happily chased frisbees in the yard and went for long walks.

Kohl was a veteran, but still had the enthusiasm of a puppy. This dog gave me all that I could ask, and then some. He also gave me Aria, a sweet girl who whelped two litters.

I truly loved this boy, my Kohl, my heart dog.
